The wording to remember
The full official name is United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
That name gives you the answer:
- Great Britain means England, Scotland and Wales.
- Northern Ireland is added to make the United Kingdom.
- The Republic of Ireland is a separate country.
Islands connected to the UK
Some islands are connected to the UK but are not part of it:
- the Channel Islands
- the Isle of Man
They have their own governments and are called Crown Dependencies.
There are also British overseas territories in other parts of the world, such as St Helena and the Falkland Islands. They are linked to the UK, but they are not part of the UK.
Parliament and devolved powers
The UK Parliament sits at Westminster.
Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland also have their own parliament or assemblies. They have powers over some local areas of government, such as health or education. This is called devolution.
Common mistake
If an answer says โEngland, Scotland, Wales and Irelandโ, pause. The UK includes Northern Ireland, not the whole island of Ireland.
