After you pass

Does the Life in the UK test expire?

In short

No. Once you pass the Life in the UK test, the result does not expire.

You can usually use the same pass later for settlement or British citizenship.

The important thing is keeping the proof of your pass.

Reviewed: May 2026.

Quick tool

Do I need to retake it?

I passed before and now I am applying for citizenship

Normally no. If you already passed for settlement or ILR, you normally do not need to take the test again for British citizenship.

I passed years ago

The pass itself does not expire. Make sure you still have the reference number, test reference ID or pass evidence you need for the application.

I lost my certificate, letter or reference

You may still be able to use the pass. Read the recovery steps on the lost certificate and reference page.

What proof do you get?

If you pass the test now, you get a unique reference number.

You need this number when you complete your citizenship or settlement application. The Home Office uses it to check that you passed.

If you took the test before 17 December 2019, GOV.UK says you may have a letter with a test reference ID instead of a unique reference number.

This is why people sometimes search for a certificate, a pass letter, a test reference ID or a unique reference number. They are usually trying to prove the same thing: that they passed.

Can you use the same pass for citizenship after ILR?

Yes, normally.

If you already passed the Life in the UK test for indefinite leave to remain, you normally do not need to take it again for British citizenship.

Check the current application rules before you apply, especially if your situation is unusual.

What if you lost the certificate or reference?

Do not panic, but do not leave it until the last minute.

If you passed under the current system, look for the email that contains your unique reference number.

If you took the test before the current digital reference system, GOV.UK says you may need to explain that you lost the letter with your application.

Read Lost Life in the UK test certificate or reference for the step-by-step version.

What if the rules change?

Your pass result does not expire.

Application rules can still change. Before you apply for settlement or citizenship, check the current GOV.UK guidance for:

  • the Life in the UK test
  • English language evidence
  • application evidence
  • ID and booking rules

Do not confuse this with the English test

The Life in the UK test is separate from the English language requirement.

Some English test results have validity rules. That does not mean your Life in the UK pass expires.
