After you pass
Lost your Life in the UK test certificate or reference?
First work out which proof you had: a modern unique reference number, or an older test reference ID / pass letter.
Reviewed: May 2026.
Recovery steps
What should you check first?
- Search your email for Life in the UK, test, pass, reference or booking.
- Check the date you passed. Passes after the digital change use a unique reference number.
- If you passed before 17 December 2019, you may have a test reference ID or pass letter instead.
- If you cannot find it, follow the current application guidance and explain the missing evidence where required.
What proof did you originally get?
If you pass the test now, you get a unique reference number.
If you took the test before 17 December 2019, GOV.UK says you may have a letter with a test reference ID instead.
People often call this a certificate, pass letter, test reference ID or unique reference number. The purpose is the same: proving that you passed.
If you passed under the current system
Look for the email or message that contains the unique reference number.
Search for:
- Life in the UK
- passed
- reference number
- booking
- test
If you passed under the older system
Look for the pass notification letter or test reference ID.
If you cannot find it, GOV.UK guidance says you may need to explain that the letter is missing with your application.
Common questions
Does losing the certificate mean the pass expired?
No. The pass does not expire. The problem is proving that you passed.
Do modern passes still use certificates?
Modern passes use a unique reference number.
Can you use the same pass for citizenship after ILR?
Usually yes. If you already passed the Life in the UK test for ILR, you normally do not need to take it again for citizenship.
Should you retake the test if you lost the reference?
Do not assume that is necessary. First check your email, old documents and the current application guidance.
