What the test can ask about
The test checks whether you understand life in the UK well enough for settlement or citizenship. It is not only a history test.
| Area | What it covers |
|---|---|
| Values | democracy, law, liberty, tolerance and community life |
| UK basics | England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and related names |
| History | dates, monarchs, wars, voting rights and recent change |
| Society | religion, customs, sport, culture, cities and everyday facts |
| Government and law | Parliament, elections, courts, rights, tax and community duties |
How the test works
The test has 24 questions, 45 minutes and an 18-answer pass mark. Read Test format if you need the practical rules before booking.
Best order to study
- Start with Values and principles.
- Learn What is the UK? so the country names are clear.
- Study history in date order.
- Study society, customs and culture.
- Study government, law, rights and duties.
How to study
Read one page at a time. Then answer a few practice questions.
If you miss a question, read the explanation and return to that topic. You do not need to reread the whole guide.
The real test is multiple choice, so familiar words, dates and names matter.
Practice while you read
- Use UK basics practice after the first few guide pages.
- Use history practice after the history section.
- Use government and law practice after the government section.
- Use the full mock test when you want a realistic checkpoint.
