Using our guide

This guide is based on the Official 3rd Edition (2023) Study Guide and contains everything you need to know to pass the Life in the UK test. Questions in the test will be based on the content in the guide, including this introduction, so make sure you study everything thoroughly. The study section has been written to ensure that anyone who can read English at ESOL Entry Level 3 or above should have no difficulty with the language.

Knowledge checks

The content is split into sections. At the end of each one there will be a quiz covering that section.

We advise you not to move on until you can comfortably get 75%, but feel free to skim through the content!

Mnemonics

Mnemonics are a tried and tested way to help with memorisation.

They help by connecting what you want to remember with something that you know already, or that is easy to recall.

For example, take "PEMDAS" (or BODMAS, depending on where you're from), which helps students remember the order of operations in arithmetic. Sometimes, it is even expanded to Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally.

Mnemonics like these can be very useful, and we encourage you to make up your own as you progress through the content. You will also find some suggested ones throughout the guide, so look out for them.
